The Federal Trade Commission announced in late December the introduction of a new blog designed to keep U.S. citizens informed about their rights and protections available to them.

Already up and running, the blog plans, in future posts, to address important consumer issues including:

  • Identity theft: Understanding this e-crime is the first step to avoiding it. Identity theft can be financially devastating, so it’s important to make sure you stay informed about how to keep yourself, your information and your family safe.
  • Consumer rights: The government has strict laws in place to make sure American consumers’ rights are protected, but scammers don’t always follow these laws. Knowing what to expect and what to look out for is an important way to make sure your rights aren’t violated and your money doesn’t get into the wrong hands.
  • Money and debt management: The recent collapse of the housing market and then the stock market, and now the drawn-out recession we’re experiencing signal that, as a nation, we aren’t the best at handling our finances. Personally, I always welcome tips on this topic, and the new FTC blog promises to include some.
  • Credit and mortgages: Borrowing money can be an excellent way to make significant purchases (like a home) – but it can also lead to unmanageable debt, and worry-fueled headaches (like foreclosure). Using credit wisely is one of the most important skills we can develop.
  • Fraud and scams: In the age of online shopping and banking, there are far too many ways to lose money to scammers and illegitimate groups looking to take your cash and scoot away. The new blog will offer tips for keeping your money and identity out of harm’s way.

According to the FTC, the blog is paving the way for Consumer Protection Week 2010, which will take place from March 7 – 13 and will promote smart consumer behavior and strong consumer awareness at all stages of life.

To encourage participation at all age levels, the CPW’s web site includes games and activities for all age groups, as well as sections for businesses, international and everyone.

This site seems to be an excellent resource for learning and teaching your family about important aspects of managing finances and financial literacy.
