Those of you living in or around the counties of Nassau and Suffolk New York should recognize the name of Cyndi Lauper, an American singer-songwriter and actress. She achieved success in the 1980s with the release of the album “She’s So Unusual” becoming the first female singer to have four top five singles released from one album. Lauper has released 11 albums and over 40 singles, and as of 2008, sold more than 25 million records worldwide.
What many of you may not remember about Lauper, who was born and grew up in New York, is the fact she was forced into bankruptcy after her first album release of “Blue Angel.” Despite critical acclaim, the album performed poorly at the sales counter causing the band that accompanied her to eventually break up. The band fired their manager for the poor performance, and he retaliated by suing the group and singer for $80,000. The suit forced the young singer into bankruptcy. Lauper, after the suit, began working in retail stores to make ends meet picking up a few gigs at local night spots singing. In 1981, Lauper met David Wolfe while singing in a local New York bar.
